Economic Development and Planning Focus Area

Summary: “Government should follow plans, too”

Economic development gets a good deal of attention by City Council. However, as a former Planning Commissioner, Warren Cooksey would like to bring more emphasis on city grovernment’s planning obligations. In particular, we need to improve our focus on the implementation plan that accompanies almost every land use plan adopted by City Council. The implementation plans include the projects that city government should complete to make the plans work.

If we expect the private sector to follow these plans, then the City Council should do a better job of ensuring government’s progress on following them. To serve its citizens effectively, government has an obligation to keep up with growth, not to suppress growth.

See the City Council’s current economic development and planning initiatives here.

Though there is one initiative related to the review of plans, there should be an initiative focused on the city’s progress with its implementation plans.
